Exteriors

Unlike mammoth SUVs, the 2013 Mazda CX 5 is low slung and impresses at first glance due to its aerodynamic design, and well laid out curves at just the right places, albeit in a muscular way.

This Mazda starts out with a stylish front bumper that houses upswept headlamps which break away from the common tear-drop design adopted by most car makers. The circular fog lamps too look quite impressive while the triangular front grill with a honeycomb design and the Mazda logo mounted at the center present a macho look in a stylishly subdued manner.

The sides of the car angle upwards and small side windows continue the macho theme with the help of wide wheel arches and 17 inch aluminum alloy wheels on the standard variants and 19 inch ones on the premium ones. The rear too presents a tight and crisp look with the innovatively designed rear bumper that literally reaches right up to the stunningly designed tail lamps.

The rear hatch too looks spectacular with a rear spoiler and dual exhausts peeping out from under the rear bumper. Kudos to the Kodo inspired styling of the Mazda design team.

Interiors

The 2013 Mazda CX 5 is equally impressive on the inside with an all Black or Tan theme based on the chosen variant. The traditionally-shaped dashboard sports curves at the right places just like the interior and features a large cowl to ensure a perfect view of all vital instruments placed before the driver.

Black leather or tan seat upholstery with double stitching provides opulent comfort while the 8 way power and heated driver seat on the Grand Touring variant ensures a stress-free drive for the happy driver of the Mazda cx 5.

The music system features MP3/USB/Bluetooth/Aux-in/HD radio compatibility and is matched with a Bose 9-speaker surround sound system for rich and crisp sound. An optional TomTom navigation system is on offer for adventurous buyers. The 5-seater CX 5 may be compact on the inside, but flexible seating and cargo space ensure up to 64.8 cubic feet of cargo space.

Engine and Transmission

The 2013 Mazda CX-5 features a 2000 cc, petrol Skyactiv-G engine that produces 155 HP along with 155 lb/ft of Torque. This engine is more focused on delivering high mileage even though it is quite sporty to drive thanks to the 6-speed automatic transmission that behaves like a manual transmission.

The CX 5 is also offered with a traditional 6-speed manual transmission. The cx 5 is available in Front Wheel Drive as well as All Wheel Drive options.

Mileage figures of the FWD option with manual transmission are 26/35 mpg in city/highway running, while the FWD automatic offers 26/32 mpg under similar conditions.

The AWD is only available with automatic transmission and delivers 25/31 mpg in city/highway runs. These figures are excellent for a compact SUV and should draw buyers towards Mazda showrooms in these fuel-starved times.

Prices of the FWD CX 5 start at around $20,600 and continue upwards with the AWD variant at around $27,000.

Mazda does seem to have a winner in its hands with the 2013 Mazda CX-5 mini crossover that has a wonderful combination of handsome looks, luxurious interiors, attractive prices, and fantastic mileage.
